(Championspk)Tennis – Victoria Azarenka was the overwhelming favourite against Agnieszka Radwanska in their quarter-final clash at the Australian Open on Wednesday. The Belarusian, who has won this title two years in a row, had beaten her Polish opponent the last 6 times they had played and 10 of the last 11 times.
But all that did not matter as Radwanska turned the tables on Azarenka and produced sublime tennis to oust the world no. 2 in three sets and advance to her first semi-final in Melbourne – guaranteeing a new Australian Open champion this year on the women’s side.
Radwanska used her superior court craft and shot selection to win the first set easily and also go up a break in the second. But Azarenka did not go down easily. She fought back to take the second set 7-5. The third set was all Radwanska’s as she thomped over Azarenka to win the set 6-0.
Radwanska will meet 24th seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in the semi-finals. Cibulkova had an easier straight sets win over Simona Halep in the other quarter-final on Wednesday.
Azarenka was gracious in defeat – saying her opponent played extremely well, getting back everything and making her feel like a spectator on the court at times.
Radwanska has never been in a grand slam final but her time might have just arrived.
