(Championspk)Tennis – At the end of last season, there was a big debate in tennis circles – as to who was the most improved player on the WTA Tour for the 2013 season. The votes were divided between American Sloane Stephens and Romania’s Simona Halep. Halep had a marvellous season in which she won 6 titles but failed to make an impression in the slams.
Now, Halep has taken another leap ahead of Stephens – reaching her first grand slam quarter-final and breaking into the world’s top 10 – while Stephens was beaten in the fourth round on Monday in Melbourne which will see her current ranking tumble down from no. 13.
Halep overcame a second set walkabout to beat former world no. 1 Jelena Jankovic in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-0. She will now meet Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova in the last eight.
After the win, Halep said her goal for the season was to reach her first slam quarter-final and now that she has done that, she would need to re-assess her goals.
