Chris Creveling (Kintnersville, Pa.), Eddy Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) and J.R. Celski (Federal Way, Wash.) advanced into the quarterfinals of the men’s 1000m short track speedskating event during competition Thursday afternoon at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi’s Coastal Cluster. Celski won his heat in a time of 1:25.428, while Creveling (1:25.069) and Alvarez (1:26.070) were second in their respective heats.
Emily Scott (Springfield, Mo.) skated in the 500m quarterfinals finishing 4th in her heat and didn’t advance.
The United States team of Eddy Alvarez (Miami, Fla.), J.R. Celski (Federal Way, Wash.), Chris Creveling (Kintnersville, Pa.) and Jordan Malone (Denton, Texas) advanced to the A final in the men’s short track 5000m relay. The U.S. did not cross the finish line in its semifinal because of a crash with the Korean team, but the Americans were advanced when officials determined that the crash was caused by contact from the Korean skater.
All three (Celski, Creveling, Alvarez) will race in the 1000m quarterfinals, which will be held on Saturday, February 15, at 2:43 p.m. MSK.
The 5000m Relay final will be held at 10:18 p.m. MSK on Friday, February 21
Heather Richardson (High Point, N.C.) was seventh and Brittany Bowe (Ocala, Fla.) eighth in the women’s 1000m long track speedskating competition Thursday evening at the Adler Arena Skating Center in Sochi’s Coastal Cluster.
Richardson covered the distance in 1:15.23, 1.21 seconds behind the winning time of 1:14.02 by China’s Hong Zhang. The Netherlands claimed the other two medals in the event, with Ireen Wust taking silver in 1:14.69 and Margot Boer winning the bronze in 1:14.90. Bowe posted a time of 1:15.47. Sugar Todd (Milwaukee, Wis.) was 32nd for the USA with a 1:19.13, while Kelly Gunther (Lorain, Ohio) was 33rd in 1:19.43.
