(Championspk)Emily Scott (Springfield, Mo.) finished fifth in the women’s short track speedskating 1500m event Saturday afternoon at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi’s Coastal Cluster. The gold medal went to China’s Yang Zhou, who crossed the finish line in 2:19.140. Suk Hee Shim of Korea took the silver medal in 2:19.239 while Italy’s Arianna Fontana won the bronze in 2:19.416. Scott’s time was 2:39.436.
Jessica Smith (Melvindale, Mich.) placed second in the B final with a time of 2:25.787. Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, Wis.) placed fourth in the heat round with a 2:27.899 and did not advance to the semifinals.
Three U.S. skaters were unable to advance to the semifinals in the men’s short track 1000m. Chris Creveling (Kintnersville, Pa.) placed third in the first heat with a time of 1:24.691, 0.201 shy of advancement. The other two skaters did not advance in the competition, as Eddy Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) crashed into Canada’s Charles Hamelin as he fell in front of him. J.R. Celski (Federal Way, Wash.) hit a block in a turn during his heat and did not advance.
