Pakistan National Game Going on Back leval in Future with PHF officials

Pakistan National Game Going on Back leval in Future with PHF officials

(By Raja Ibrar)Shahbaz Senior became the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) secretary general on Wednesday. Shahbaz replaced former Olympian Rana Mujahid Ali who resigned from the coveted post after two years in office. Even after being given a three-year extension by the PHF Congress last week, Mujahid’s resignation was not a surprise after a probe committee constituted by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held the top PHF officials responsible for the national team’s dismal performance at the Hockey World League (HWL) in Antwerp. Mujahid’s days were numbered the moment Akhtar Rasool resigned and a retired brigadier, very ambitious Khalid Sajjad Khokhar, became the president of the national federation. The appointment of the new PHF secretary was announced at a sham press conference by PHF chief Khalid in Islamabad. Khalid also announced new appointments for the national junior team. Rasheed Junior was named as the chief selector and Tahir Zaman as the head coach of the national junior team. The other members of the junior selection committee are Saeed Khan, Farhat Khan, Shahbaz Junior and Waseem Feroz. The two new assistant coaches of the junior squad are Zeeshan Ashraf and Mohammad Irfan. The Akhtar-led PHF management was in hot waters for the last two months after Pakistan failed to qualify for the Olympics for the time in their history. Pakistan, who had won Olympic gold three times and World Cup four times, finished eighth in the Olympic qualifying round in Belgium in July. Now they will not be playing in the Rio Olympics 2016 in Brazil. Living in a fool’s paradise, Mujahid was hoping that new PHF president Khalid would work with him. But he soon realised that his ‘services were no longer required’. Khalid and his cronies gave a clear message to Mujahid that they wanted their own man at the post of secretary. And former Olympian Mujahid had no choice. It was wiser for Mujahid if he had resigned with his president Akhtar. But he made himself a laughing stock. “I have tendered my resignation to PHF president Khalid. I have stepped down willingly and without any pressure,” Mujahid told reporters at a news conference at the Pakistan Sports Board in the federal capital. He said he had tried his best to improve Pakistan hockey but decided to step down to give a chance to someone else to work towards that direction. “During my tenure as secretary I faced criticism with decency and courage. However; I appeal to all those Olympians who have been opposing us to allow the new PHF team to work for the betterment of national game.

Shah spins Pakistan to thumping win in Sri Lanka

Shah spins Pakistan to thumping win in Sri Lanka

ISLAMABAD( by Naseeb Elahi )Yasir Shah claimed seven second innings wickets in a spectacular display of leg-spin bowling to destroy Sri Lanka as Pakistan crushed the hosts by 10 wickets in the first test to go 1-0 up in the three-match series at Galle on Sunday.

The 29-year-old spinner, who had claimed two wickets in the first innings, took a career-best 7-76 in the second before Pakistan chased down the 90-run victory target in a little over 11 overs to register their first test win in Sri Lanka since 2006.

Openers Mohammad Hafeez (46) and Ahmed Shehzad (43) scored briskly to seal the victory even after rain had washed out four sessions of the contest on the first two days at the Galle International Stadium.

While Shah was the wrecker-in-chief, paceman Wahab Riaz claimed 2-46. Dimuth Karunaratne (79) was the highest scorer for the hosts who folded for 206, leaving Pakistan to score only 90 in the final session to win the match.

After Sri Lanka resumed the final day on 63-2, Shah struck with the first ball of the day with nightwatchman Dilruwan Perera offering no shot to a ball that went to hit his off-stump

Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne (44) then added 69 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the ship before wheels came off Sri Lanka’s innings.

Thirimanne, who hit Riaz for two boundaries in the same over, edged the bowler to slip where Younus Khan took the catch.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews looked in discomfort against Riaz but was unlucky to be adjudged caught out at short leg.

Mathews immediately sought a review, convinced he did not nick it and replay did not suggest any edge either but the original decision stayed, prompting the batsman to leave the field shaking his head.

Karunaratne then succumbed to a rush of blood, charging out to Shah only to miss the ball and get stumped, a poor way to end an otherwise patient innings.

Shah dismissed Kithuruwan Vithanage to complete his only second test five-for and Sri Lanka soon came apart.

The teams move to Colombo for the second test starting on Thursday.

Misbah Upbeats Taking Up Sri Lanka Challenge

(By Rashid Ali Siddiqui)Pakistani cricket team, led by Misbah-ul-Haq is leaving from Lahore to Colombo, Sri Lanka on Monday night to play a three-match Test series followed by five ODIs and two T20 matches. “We are ready to take the challenge from Sri Lanka at their home soil. Our boys are ready and in good frame of mind to give positive results,” said captain before departure. He said that players worked hard to improve their fitness and they are able to deliver in hard conditions. The 15-member Pakistan squad includes Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Azhar Ali (vc), Ahmed Shehzad, Asad Shafiq, Ehsan Adil, Haris Sohail, Imran Khan, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Shan Masood, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah, Younis Khan, Zulfiqar Babar. It may be mentioned that Pakistan opening batsmen Ahmed Shehzad and Shan Masood have been recalled for the three-test series against Sri Lanka while offspinner Saeed Ajmal missed out as he still needs to revive his golden form with the ball. Both openers were not selected in the two-test series in Bangladesh, which Pakistan won 1-0 last month on different reasons while Shan was on Sri Lankan tour with Pakistan A team, Ahmed Shehzad was sidelined due to discipline issue on head coach Waqar Younis report. Ajmal has been struggling with his remodeled bowling action since returning from suspension in February. He took part in the limited-overs series against Bangladesh but failed to excel. Chief selector Haroon Rashid said the selectors kept form and fitness in mind, while also considering feedback from the team management on performances in Bangladesh. Legspinner Yasir Shah is the only specialist slow bowler in the squad, while all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez will be utilized as an off-spinner. Fast bowlers Imran Khan and Ehsan Adil have been included in the 15-man squad

With little on the line, final NHL weekend full of sentimentality

(By Josh Elliott )In an odd quirk of the schedule, this weekend’s games didn’t mean much for the playoff race. Every post-season team was already determined by the end of Friday, meaning all that remained this weekend was to figure out matchups and the President’s Trophy winner.

So with the battle for the Stanley Cup on pause, many teams chose to make it a weekend full of career firsts – and career lasts. Click here to Read More …
