Report: Islanders, Barclays Center exploring out-clause options

Report: Islanders, Barclays Center exploring out-clause options

(Championspk )The New York Islanders have only been playing at Barclays Center in Brooklyn since the fall, but both parties are reportedly already exploring ways to sever that relationship. According to a report in the New York Post, the 25-year lease between Isles owner Charles Wang and the arena contains an out clause that kicks in after the fourth NHL season. The Post is reporting “both sides are secretly exploring ways to cut ties or modify the existing terms of their lease.”

“I don’t think either side ever believed the full lease would be honored,” a source told the Post. “I just didn’t think we’d be talking about this the first year in.” The Islanders moved to Barclays Center – home of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets – in time for the 2015-16 season after 43 years at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. Citing obstructed-view seating, more expensive tickets, altering longstanding traditions (like jersey colors), the Post notes Isles fans have been frustrated with the move. The Islanders are averaging 13,424 fans per game, 28th in the league. Barclays Center seats 15,795 for hockey — including about 1,500 with obstructed views featuring discounted pricing. However, the team is 19-8-4 at Barclays Center. Only Chicago, the New York Rangers, Washington and Dallas have more wins on home ice. The Post provided two possible alternatives for the Islanders. One is moving them to a new arena in Queens. The other is moving back them to Nassau Coliseum, which is expected to undergo a $260-million renovation next year under the guidance of Nets and Barclays Center owner Mikhail Prokhorov. Once renovations are complete, the Coliseum will seat roughly 13,000 spectators. The Islanders averaged 15,334 fans per game there last season.

Young Blues fan makes heartwarming gesture, gifts Tarasenko stick to another youngster

Young Blues fan makes heartwarming gesture, gifts Tarasenko stick to another youngster

(Champiospk )Every young fan at a hockey game thinks of the moment a puck comes sailing into the crowd and they make a great grab to take home a souvenir. That’s a moment that kid will never forget. So imagine instead of a puck, it’s a stick, and instead of catching the stick, he or she is handed it by one of the best players on the home team. That’s exactly what happened in St. Louis this past weekend, as post-game a young fan leaned over the railing and held his hands out only for Vladimir Tarasenko, arguably the best Blues player, to hand off his stick as a souvenir.

The young fan who snatched it up and was ready to leave, but instead of taking off with his newfound treasure, the young man, who was wearing a Jori Lehtera jersey, spotted a youngster in a Tarasenko jersey and did the selfless thing: he walked back down the stairs, up to the kid and passed off Tarasenko’s stick

The story doesn’t end there, though. The Blues caught wind of the young fan’s gesture and took to their Twitter account to seek him out. “Anyone know the young fan in the (Lehtera) jersey?” the Blues asked via Twitter. “We’d like to reward him for his nice gesture.” In less than a day, the Blues had located the fan and contacted his family. What exactly the team did for the youngster isn’t known, but we’re sure St. Louis took care of him. It’s nice to see the Blues rewarding him, too, because after giving away a prize like that from Tarasenko in order to make another young fan’s wish come true, he deserves everything that comes his way.

England learn World Twenty20 fate

England learn World Twenty20 fate

England(Championspk )England will open their 2016 World Twenty20 campaign against West Indies in Mumbai after the ICC announced the tournament schedule today.

Eoin Morgan’s side, who have won their last six 20-over contests, have been drawn in Super 10 Group 1 and, as well as the Windies, will face Sri Lanka, South Africa and the winner of Group B – which includes Zimbabwe and Scotland.

After facing 2010 winners West Indies on March 16, England remain in Mumbai to take on South Africa two days later, before heading to New Delhi to face the winners of Group B on March 23.

The group campaign concludes against Sri Lanka in New Delhi on March 26, with the top two sides progressing to the semi-final.

The International Cricket Council announced the schedule at the launch ceremony in Mumbai on Friday. The competition will take place at eight venues from March 8 to April 3, with Mumbai and New Delhi staging the semi-finals and Kolkata the final.

ICC chairman Shashank Manohar, who attended the draw, said: “India is a country where cricket is a religion and not many places can match the passion for the game like India.

“I am fully confident that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will deliver an outstanding world cricket event, just like the ICC Cricket World Cups in 1987, 1996 and 2011.”

ICC chief executive David Richardson said: “The ICC World Twenty20 is an event which puts the world’s best cricketers in the shortest format of the game against each other in a nation-versus-nation contest.

“The Twenty20 format provides the perfect vehicle by which the ICC can further globalise the game, providing international exposure and opportunity to our top associate and affiliate members.

“The ICC World Twenty20 event structure is designed to provide highly competitive matches throughout, with eight evenly matched sides fighting it out in the first round and the best two then getting in the mix with the top eight ranked teams in the Super 10 stage, where the intensity and competition will be of the very highest level.”

Landan(Championspk)It might be one down for Andy Murray at the ATP World Tour Final but he is taking nothing for granted in London. An opening clash with David Ferrer proved relatively routine for the Olympic champion as he came through in straight sets 6-4 6-4. But, while he might have taken an early lead in his group, he knows a match with Rafa Nadal will be a stern test. “It was a tough match with a lot of long rallies and he fought right the way through to the end as always,” said Murray. “You have to try and win every match, every game counts, a few years ago I got knocked out in the group stages by one game or something. “So you need to try and win the matches in two sets if you get the opportunity which was good for me today. “Just because I have won my first match there are no guarantees and I need to win the next one which will be tough against Rafa.” – See more at:

Dujardin: Valegro will retire after Rio Games

Dujardin: Valegro will retire after Rio Games

Landan (Championspk )Two-time Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin says Rio 2016 will be the final competition for her horse Valegro. The pair won team and individual dressage titles at London 2012 and also picked up two World Championship gold medals and a silver at the 2014 World Equestrian Games. As well as world and Olympic titles Dujardin and Valegro have seven European medals to their name – five of which are gold. But their run together will come to an end in Brazil with Durjardin excited about one final ride. “This will be Valegro’s retirement after Rio so I want to go out there and want to enjoy every last minute,” she told the BBC. “He’s got to stay fit and healthy and get ready for the flight. It’s a 16-hour flight and he needs to acclimatise. “I’m really, really excited heading towards Rio. We get to go out in February and have a look around and fingers crossed it all goes well. – See more at:
